Another New Start - Ack!

I decided not to leave today after all. I'm going to go down tomorrow instead. I started working on "The Marriage of Minds" a little bit last night and then I had to put it down. The linen is just driving me nuts! Why did I start it on that awful linen?? Not only did I start it on blah linen, but I also started stitching on the horizontal. This was way back before I realized it's best to start stitching next to a vertical thread (here's a short article for those that don't know about the horizontal and vertical threads). I was just talking about this with Amy. It's the reason why I had to stop stitching my Drawn Thread "Sampler Game Board." So what do I do when a project is driving me nuts? I start something new of course!

I decided to start another Drawn Thread "The Riddle." I got a small package from Elegant Stitch yesterday containing a few silks that I was missing and the fabric - 32 ct. Vintage Fawn. It's much darker than I'm used to, but I'm liking it.

Threads and Linen for Drawn Thread "The Riddle"

I got a small start last night.

I know I'm going to love this - it's going to take awhile, but I'm really going to try to stick with it. Well, I have to do some work for my brother and I need to finish cleaning before I go down to Florida tomorrow! Write soon (next week)!

  1. Thanks for the info on starting next to a vertical thread. As a new stitcher, I didn't realize this made any difference. I love your new start!

  2. That is going to look fantastic on that linen...

Thank you for the article I dont think I have ever took notice of where I was stitching on the linen. So thank you again :)

  3. Hi Nicole: If you aren't feeling good about the piece you are stitching, you will probably not want to keep picking it up, so why not start on your new project to rejuvenate your interest! I will love watching your progress. Maybe you can just frame the beautiful work already on Marriage of the Minds. What you have finished is gorgeous!!

  4. Your linen always looks so neat. Do you use a scroll frame floor stand or qsnap? or just in hand stitch?

  5. I love that fabric!! The feel of linen really does make a difference on how motivated we are to stitch, doesn't it? I have a couple of projects like that as well....started it on linen that I didn't particularly care for and now they languish as a result. A couple of them I have started over, but some, I am too far along to start from scratch so I pick them up occasionally and do a few obligatory strands before putting them back away. I was wondering the same thing as Jennifer, do you use scroll rods, qsnaps or in hand? Your fabric is always perfectly wrinkle free in your photos and it sometimes looks like there is a scroll rod attached.

  7. You'll enjoy the Riddle. Swan Sampler Guild did it as a stitch-a-long this past year. It's a fabulous piece!

Hey...if you stitch on Marriage a little each year, you could have it done for your 50th wedding anniversary! Just a thought! :)

  8. I didn't realize it could make a difference starting on a vertical thread. I'm going to try it out on some scrap linen. I probably read that Kathy Dyer tutorial ages ago and forgot all about it! Thanks!

I think maybe stitchers all have some ways of doing things that need to be done "just so". I know I get very fussy about railroading the threads and that's why sometimes I like to stitch with 1 strand over 1 so I don't have to worry about it.

  9. This is going to be lovely, Nicole!! Love the colors and can't wait to see more.

I think that happens to me often, start something and put it aside for whatever reason. All of that wasted stitching time is a shame.

  11. You're off to a great start, Nicole! I always stitch to the bottom left of the vertical thread, too; makes it hard to see when you do it differently on a RR or something. Have a safe trip!

  13. Well, gee, I liked that fabric you were using for Marriage of Minds. But I have to have my stitches properly placed as you do, so I would've had to start over also. Whatever you're stitching, I always love to see it.

  14. I've never paid attention to where I start seems like too muchhard work to work it out!

You'll love stitching The Riddle it's a real joy to do

  15. I always work next to a vertical stitch. I can't stitch any other way. It's my only complaint about RR's - I have a hard time with it when someone else works on the horizontal.

Are you going to re-start Marriage if Minds at some point? I haven't heard of The Riddle - I'll have to look for it. I love the colors.

  16. I really love that fabric you picked out for the piece. I know how you feel about it being a little darker than you're used to, but I think that it the perfect fabric for it.

  20. The Riddle is just beautiful! I'd tuck Marriage Mart away for a while. I had a project that was like that. It looked pretty, but my enthusiasm to work on it died midway through the WIP. I started to think of it as my penalty WIP. Everytime I switched stitching projects, I'd first put one full thread into the penalty project. It's the only way I ever finished it.
